Embroideries of India

Embroidery is a craft of decorating a fabric using a needle and thread either by hand or a machine. Those days learning an art and developing one’s skill towards it was a mandatory practice in our country. We would’ve seen right from our great grandma sewing, tatting or knitting all the time to create something out of their hands and gift them to their loved ones. This created an ultimate bond and was treasured for generations in their memory. We are known for passing on a heritage and legacy to our heirs.

Our country is known for vibrant coloured embroidery practised in different methods from different regions. Variety is the spice of life and thanks to our diverse culture which has given enormous varieties in fabric and embroidery. Few interesting threads and embroidery that weaves together the fabric of India are Chinkankari, Kantha,phulkari, zardosi, Rajasthani patch work, kashidakari, aari, mirror work, gota Patti work, pitta work, kasuti and Kutch embroidery. As a proud Indian and art lover one should know atleast a gist of our Indian embroideries which I’m sure is interesting and I’m happy to share it with you.

Chikankari is one of the Lucknow’s most ancient art form on fabrics. They’re also known as the shadow embroidery. Kantha work, which is local to Bolpur Shanthi Niketan regions of Bengal. Phulkari is a traditional embroidery design of Punjab. Darn stitch is the main characteristic of phulkari and are mostly of floral patterns. Zardosi is known for its grandeur and richness. This art form is very ancient and is supposed to be as old as Rig veda. It is done using an ornate metallic wire or a fine metallic spring.

Rajasthani Patch Work is a form of needle work which sew together many pieces of fabric forming a design or a pattern. These kind of colourful patchwork as a wall hanging is a much adorned piece of art. Kasuthi is a traditional embroidery practiced in Karnataka. It is found in the Dharwad regions and are formed out of geometrical shapes and patterns. Kutch Embroidery – it is a signature textile art of the tribal community of Kutch district in Gujarath. They are very intricate and are of beautiful geometric designs. Aari Work is done on a stretched fabric and stitching the design with a long needle which has a hook in the end. This work consists of beads, stones, golden and silver threads which gives a royal richness to the design. Aari work is known for its elegant thread work that enhances the gravity of hand embroidery.

Gota Patti or gota work is a type of Indian embroidery that originated in Rajasthan, India.It uses the applique technique. Small pieces of zari ribbon are applied onto the fabric with the edges sewn down to create elaborate patterns. Gota embroidery is used extensively in South Asian wedding and formal clothes.

Pitta work is an ancient work of embroidery in which first the filling is done with the help of metal wires and then it is beaten so that the texture becomes uniform.

These hand sewn and handwoven embroideries are very authentic and are such intricate ones to be preserved. Let’s try to explore these wonderful art and own a few to share the pride with our next generation. After all HAPPINESS IS HANDMADE.
