By SHEFA RAFI
In a bid to showcase and recognise Coimbatore’s first post office at Podanur, Praveen Venkataraman, a PG grad from PSGCAS has made a full length feature film aptly naming it as ‘Podanur Thapal Nilayam’. Incidentally, he happens to be a resident of Podanur. The shoot which commenced five years ago is now all set for release. Young and enterprising Praveen got his tinsel town dream a reality with the successful completion of this movie.
And the story is based on a real life incident narrated by his dad (retired postal assistant) during his tenure in 1990. Interestingly, the movie is dedicated to the 150 year old Podanur Post Office, which is the first post office in Coimbatore. Praveen chose October 9 (World Post Day) to release the first look poster through a virtual meet with Mundasupatti and Ratchasan movie director Rajkumar and Indru Nettru Nalai and Ayalaan movie director Ravi Kumar.
Notably, Praveen was actively involved in computer graphics and had worked as pipeline technical director for Rajnikant’s movie Kochadaiyan besides showing his prowess in a few Hollywood movies in Mumbai. This scribe recalls meeting him during a shoot at Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank building opposite to St Michael’s church on the Big Bazaar Street in 2015. Retired postmaster and first Meghdoot recipient Kovaipudur N Hariharan also featured in the movie in a small role.
The story knot relates to an incident that happens between Saturday morning and Monday morning. A real post office set was erected at TMB building. Local theatre and stage artistes have been roped in for different characters in the movie. Praveen, a resident of Podanur, craved for making a movie about the post office where he used to frequent during his childhood days. The movie is produced under his ‘Bicycle Cinemas’ banner with Sundar Sukumaran handling the camera.
