Listed below are some of the most popular fitness myths and facts that our experts have clarified:
If you don’t exercise your muscles turn to fat. Fact: You burn (lose) fat and build (gain) muscles. They are as different as “Apples and Oranges”. Lack of exercise will result in reduction in muscle mass/size, unwanted weight gain and fat storage.
Early Morning is the best time to work out–Fact: It’s a great way to start your day but according to a 2019 study published in the Journal of Physiology, working out in the afternoon or evening is as effective as the morning workouts.
Doing crunches and sit ups will get you 6 pack abs–Fact: No matter what your exercise routine is, it would be difficult to see a 6 pack if you have a layer of fat covering it. Crunches, Sit ups and other ab exercises are great for building core muscles, if done frequently and properly they can help to tone your abs.
You should hit the gym everyday–Fact: Your body requires time to rest and recover. During 24-48 hours following your workout, your body struggles to rebuild your muscles resulting in improved strength, endurance and tone. It is important to provide sufficient rest. The thumb rule is not to work the same set of muscles every day. However, it is equally important to have some type of physical activity every day.
Workout should at least be for an hour–Fact: While the WHO states that 150 minutes a week, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prescribes 25 to 30 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise (Cardio) at least 3 times a week and muscle strengthening activities twice a week.
Every body is different, so your training schedule will vary depending on your physique, diet and your fitness goals. It is important to do a proper assessment before finalising the schedule.
It’s not just the first time but every time there should be a proper assessment before making modifications to the workout schedule.
Working with a friend is distracting–Fact: You tend to exercise harder when you are working out with someone according to a 2015 study in Journal of Personality & Social Psychology.
You may be drawn into a conversation during your session but it also makes you more accountable.
