Let’s Celebrate The Ability of Differently-Abled

‘There is no greater disability in society than the inability to see a person as more’. It is estimated that one billion people live with disability around the globe, which means 15% of the population.
United Nation has recognized December 3rd as, International Day of People with Disability, for better understanding about people with disabilities, to create awareness and to celebrate and recognize their achievements and contributions.
The annual theme for the year 2018 is, Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality, which aims at promoting empowerment and helping to create opportunities for people with disabilities. Empowerment here means involving and including people in education, work, health and social protection. When people are empowered; they step forward to the scene from the unseen and utilise the advantages and opportunities available, hence becoming a change agent and are ready to embrace their civic responsibilities.
The society must be educated with understanding and awareness of disability issues and mobilize support for the rights and well-being and raising up their standards in all spheres of society and development. The public, NGOs and social organizations should play a vital role in accelerating and removing the barriers to social inclusion, equal participation for people with various disabilities, such as –Vision impairment, hearing impairment, mental health condition, intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, autism spectrum disorder and physical disability.
Many government organization, (like Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), Department of Empowerment of Person with Disabilities (DWPD), Directorate General of Health Services, National Trust for the welfare of persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities) are providing immense support for the benefit and upliftment to people of such needs, by various grants, subsidies and schemes in the field of education, employment, skill development and independent living.
Let’s pledge on this occasion, as an individual responsible citizen and as a society as a whole to join hands in rendering a helping hand and offering a moral support, thus creating a sense of belongingness; in safeguarding their dignity and raising their standards so they can excel in their life in becoming a contributing citizen. ‘The Ability of a person should be considered and valued than the Disability.’
